Does a citation mark next to an LLM-generated sentence...

A citation mark is not a guarantee of provenance. Research, such as the FActScore finding, demonstrates that over 30% of both correct and incorrect sentences in audited systems carry citations. This indicates that the presence of a citation and the factual correctness of a sentence are nearly independent variables. A post-hoc citation search simply matches generated text to similar-looking passages after the fact, rather than conditioning the generation process on the source material.
